What is Niacinamide and How it Works

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 and has specific metabolic functions inside cells. It’s necessary for energy production, cellular stress responses, and cellular repair. As a topical ingredient, niacinamide is used in dermatology to treat acne and skin irritations.

As a cosmeceutical in skincare, niacinamide is a powerful anti-aging ingredient that reduces oxidative stress, inflammation, and pigmentation in the skin. It acts as an antioxidant and improves and stabilizes the skin barrier, reducing water loss and improving hydration. It also helps promote protein synthesis (including keratin, the main protein in hair) and ceramides, which are lipids that help form the protective barrier on the skin. Further, niacinamide supports microbiome balance. As a result, it may prevent or slow skin aging.

In clinical trials, niacinamide improves the surface structure of the skin, smoothing wrinkles and fine lines while plumping the skin.

Niacinamide for Acne: Benefits and Results

Niacinamide has many positive characteristics, making it a therapeutic ingredient for preventing and reducing acne. First, niacinamide reduces sebum production. Sebum is the natural oil produced by the skin but may be overproduced in people with acne, creating an oily and acne-prone complexion

Second, niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties and decreases skin inflammation when used topically. Since acne is associated with increased inflammation, you can use niacinamide for acne reduction. Because of these anti-inflammatory actions, niacinamide benefits other inflammatory skin conditions, including psoriasis, dermatitis, and more.

Several studies suggest niacinamide serum reduces acne compared to baseline or has similar results to other acne treatments. Niacinamide benefits for acne may also include reducing acne scars. There are no adverse effects with topical use, making niacinamide an incredibly safe skincare ingredient.

Reducing Redness with Niacinamide Serum

If you have red, irritated skin chances, are you’ve tried many remedies for red patches on the skin. But have you tried the ordinary niacinamide?

Niacinamide is anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and an antioxidant. It also protects against sun damage and oxidative stress while improving the skin’s integrity. These properties are essential when treating redness, irritation, and skin rashes. As you’ll see below, niacinamide also helps to even skin tone.

How Niacinamide Fades Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation occurs with age and sun damage, producing dark patches or spots on the skin. The delicate skin around the eyes, on the face, and on the hands is susceptible. Niacinamide helps decrease pigmentation and inflammation to promote an even skin tone.

Unlike other skin-brightening ingredients, niacinamide doesn’t directly block melanin production. Melanin is the molecule that gives the skin its darker pigment. The skin still makes melanin in melanocytes (melanin-producing cells), but niacinamide blocks the transfer of melanin to other cells. This mechanism means that niacinamide’s effects are dose-dependent and reversible. You’ll find more skin-lightening effects at higher concentrations

Additionally, niacinamide reduces inflammation, which supports an even skin tone and texture, and other anti-aging benefits. Use niacinamide for acne scars, age spots, and overall skin brightening.
